Transform Through Travel: How to Use Astrocartography for Healing & Development

What if you could travel somewhere to improve your life?

And I’m not just talking about going somewhere “lucky”. (I’m looking at you, Tiktoks/Reels that tell everyone to move to their Jupiter lines)

I wholeheartedly believe in the power each person holds to improve their lives. Perhaps I’m a self-development junkie, but I think everyone is capable of embodying the highest version of themselves through experiencing life. Yeah shamanic journeys and tripping on ayahuasca can be powerful experiences, but what if it can be found in the every day?

Locational astrology (aka Astrocartography) can bring out different aspects of self that may be hidden or not understood. Astrocartography is the art of mapping your natal chart across the globe to reveal which locations are most aligned with different parts of your personality and purpose. Each planetary line carries a unique energetic signature, where some amplify your voice, and others stir your shadow.

If you consider Carl Jung’s theories that the external mirrors the internal, particularly those parts that are unconscious, and that different areas of the world carry stronger energies related to planetary energies, it is certainly possible that traveling somewhere can bring out parts of you that were previously unknown.

Planets & Psychology

Your planetary placements, according to psychological astrology, are essentially parts of you. I’ve already covered the basic meanings of each of the planets in my Astro 101 series, but below is a summary of the different planets and how they relate to our self:

Sun

  • Symbolizes the central organizing principle of the personality-the sense of self, purpose, and conscious identity. Can sometimes relate to influences of father figures.

Moon

  • Reflects emotional needs, nurturing qualities, and instinctual responses, often rooted in early childhood experiences related to the mother figure.

Mercury

  • Governs cognitive processes, communication styles, and how information is processed and shared.

Venus

  • Relates to how we form relationships, what we find pleasurable or beautiful, and our capacity for intimacy and sociability

Mars

  • The assertive, energetic part of the psyche that motivates action, pursuit of goals, and how we express passion or anger

Jupiter

  • Associated with personal growth, optimism, philosophical outlook, and the pursuit of meaning and opportunity

Saturn

  • Symbolizes the capacity for self-regulation, perseverance, and the development of maturity and resilience through challenges

Uranus

  • Reflects the urge for independence, originality, and the ability to break free from convention and embrace change

Neptune

  • The spiritual, imaginative, and empathetic dimensions of the psyche, as well as tendencies toward idealism or escapism

Pluto

  • Connected to deep psychological change, confronting fears and reclaiming personal power, and the processes of transformation and renewal in the psyche.

Lunar Nodes (North Node & South Node)

  • North Node: Represents qualities and experiences to develop for growth and fulfillment; the path of future development and psychological evolution.

  • South Node: Represents past patterns, comfort zones, and ingrained habits; areas of over-reliance that may hinder further growth

These planetary energies will also be influenced by the zodiac sign they are in, but understanding the basic meaning of each planet can help you understand what major themes you’re likely to encounter when you travel to that line on your Astrocartography map.

As an example, let’s take a peek at my recent client.

She came to me seeking a place to go that gave her some peace after many years of turmoil. She had somewhat recently temporarily relocated to just outside of Asheville, NC. When we pulled up her astrocartography map, we found that Mars was sitting on her IC. Her natal Mars sits in Gemini and retrograde. As we spoke, I mentioned it was likely that while there she was likely perpetually working through a lot of shadow work and questioning “why” she acted the way she did related to her upbringing, especially since her North Node moved into her relocated chart’s 8th house. She then revealed that she was working with a healer 3x per week to do just that. While helpful, living on a Mars line can be exhausting and in her case, probably mentally exhausting constantly ruminating on these core parts of herself. From there I was able to provide some options for her to consider that would give her a little mental break.

In my opinion, as you navigate experiences related to the planetary theme, you are made more aware of your own subconscious beliefs. When you become more aware of your beliefs, it is then that you can begin to work through it and fully integrate the parts of yourself while there and beyond. Think of it as a vacation with exposure therapy.

How to Create Transformative Travel with Astrocartography

This concept is the foundation of my service, but I’m not here to gatekeep because I know not everyone needs me to do this for them (nor can I serve everyone) so here’s how you can utilize this tool yourself.

1) Understand your birth chart - this is an absolute must before trying to even read your astrocartography map because it lays the foundation for who you are as an individual. Knowing and understanding potential shadows and gifts of each sign your chart occupies is important here. You can look at a list of basic signatures and shadows for each sign here.

2) Select a placement that you feel drawn to or perhaps relates to a theme you may be struggling with. For some it may be connecting with intuition (Neptune line), for others it may be connecting with your emotions (Moon line), or maybe it’s asserting yourself (Mars line), and for others it could be uncovering your inner genius (Uranus line). It’s best to trust your intuition here since 9/10 it’s shown to be in alignment with your soul’s journey.

3) Find the line on your astrocartography map. You can either do it yourself on various sites or have someone else like me pull it for you. The angle type will point to how the planetary energy will show up (self, home, relationships, career/public image).

4) Travel there with the intention to stay for at least a week. Make sure you take a journal to note some of your experiences and/or have someone you can talk to about your experiences.

5) Upon return, recount your experiences and note how things have shifted. Notice the subtle (and not-so-subtle) changes in your thoughts, your body, your relationships, and your sense of self. What did the place reveal to you? What mirrors did it hold up? This is where the real integration begins, when you pause long enough to listen to what the journey taught you, and begin weaving those insights into your daily life. Some examples of prompts to reflect on: “what parts of me felt more alive while there?” or “what did I leave behind and what did I bring home?”

Summary

At the end of the day, astrocartography isn’t about chasing some perfect destination. It’s about intentionally choosing to meet yourself, fully and honestly, in a new environment that reflects back who you’re becoming. When you travel with awareness, curiosity, and a willingness to be moved, you don’t just see new places, you see new parts of yourself.
